The UGS ran the working tests at the Kent Game Fair this weekend, and this event was well supported by judges, helpers and competitors. Well done to everybody, especially those in the ribbons. Shona was 2nd in the open on both days, and I was more than happy to be just behind Pat Elliot on Saturday and Jason Young on Sunday, both of whom are experienced handlers and a joy to watch.
I took Shona’s six month old pup with me, and Riska took everything in her stride. She was calm yet attentive when shots were fired and dummies thrown, so much so that I decided to see how we got on with the steadiness test. She produced some reasonable heelwork off the lead, sat still while I picked up a dummy, was steady to a dummy being throw and happy to heel away from it, then be sent back to retrieve it, as well as sitting while I walked away, dropped a dummy and then recalled her with her picking the dummy on the way. It wasn’t perfect, but the fact that she was off the lead and did as I asked while there were plently of distractions going on was very pleasing.
