Mother and daughter neck and neck

I had a good day out on Sunday, competing with Shona and her daughter Riska in the UGS open water competition at 500 Acre Wood. They both ran well, and as we stood around drinking tea and eating cake while waiting for the results, I said that I really couldn’t say which of the two had done the best.
Our working test secretary announced that two dogs had tied with the same score, so there would be a run off between dogs 42 and 49. It suddenly dawned on me that both dogs were mine, so they each had to do another test in front of all four judges, with everybody else watching closely. They both picked the marked retrieve into the water cleanly, but I felt that Riska was slightly quicker and had a nicer delivery than Shona, although Shona took a better line back to me.
After a short wait the results were given and Shona was in fourth place, with Riska third, which really pleased me because she is very young to be competing at open level.
Talking of youngsters, Moidart is now thirteen months old and doing well, proving calm yet fast, just like her mother and older half sister. She has been to a few training events and has concentrated on what I’ve asked her to do as well as remaining steady, even when another young dog has rushed up to her.

    1. Thankyou Shirley – they are even more contented today because they’ve had their reward of a nice long walk and a marrowbone each.
