Riska is making a superb job of motherhood with the result that her nice strong litter of nine puppies are really rather plump. They have developed at a rate of knots this week, so they are now walking well and starting to play, as well as responding to me when I speak to them. They were wormed for the first time earlier in the week, an experience that they found quite disgusting, but it will be easier next time, because they will be on solid food, so I can put the wormer in some puppy milk and feed them one at a time to ensure that each pup gets the correct dose.
Riska is very settled and easy going, just like her mother Shona, so we have started allowing visitors. The first of the new puppy owners has been to see them; this was Penny, who Riska knows. Penny owns Riska’s litter brother Teal, so it is nice that she is having a pup from this litter too. I like to space the visits out to ensure that potential owners get plenty of time to see the puppies and ask any questions, so I prefer to have no more than one viewing on any given day.
I took individual photos of the puppies last Sunday when they were exactly two weeks old; I do this so that when they go to their new homes the owners can see what their puppy looked like, rather that just seeing a picture of a group of pups, with no idea as to which is which.
What gorgeous healthy pups. They are off to a flying start! What a great mum Riska is. Very well done Nessa. Oh how I wish I was selecting one of those chunky pups!!
